Great year behind, new strategy period ahead

When the winds of changes shift, it’s comforting that one thing doesn’t: Tornator’s financial performance. Our company was established 20 years ago to offer a steady volume of timber for the needs of the Finnish forest industry, and a steady profit to investors. This is a promise we have kept. Timber deliveries reached a record high in 2021, and income made by the owners was excellent.

Having said that, it is also important to appreciate the impact we have on social and ecological sustainability. Tornator’s forests again employed more than a thousand man-years, and we were by far the largest payer of corporation tax in South Karelia. The situation is the same in the other countries that we operate in, Estonia and Romania. We operate in sparsely populated areas, and have a major impact locally. The importance of natural capital was a topic of heated debate in 2021. We are proud to be forerunners in ecological sustainability in forestry. The environmental programmes that we published for 2021–2030 attracted plenty of interest, and for a good reason. Our ambitious and transparent reporting of environmental sustainability is certain to meet the needs of many stakeholder groups.

Our strategy centres around three concepts: Sustainability – Partnership – Growth.

This means Tornator has a solid basis from which it is safe to reach even higher. Our entire staff participated in creating the strategy for 2022–2024. Our strategy centres around three concepts: Sustainability – Partnership – Growth. All our strategic goals are built around these key factors.
COVID-19 has not led to any business losses for Tornator, but the pandemic’s effects on wellbeing at work and the future of working are not fully known yet. For this reason, we have conducted regular surveys to find out what the atmosphere is like among the employees and how they are doing in their daily work life. The aim is to find a working model that suits us best. This work is ongoing.

Since the day Tornator was established, many things have changed both in the forest sector and in business in general. But one thing never changes: long-term good performance is always down to a motivated staff. The key job of management is to make the staff shine, because only this can ensure an excellent customer experience and positive financial performance.

Passion for the forest – sustainable solutions across generations.

In 2022, we will celebrate Tornator’s 20th anniversary, and I believe that our new statement of purpose, created together with our personnel, reflects well our attitude towards and objectives for the next decades: Passion for the forest – sustainable solutions across generations.
